PhotographIe de gouttiere

Perched like a chat de gouttière — a stray cat on the roof — I spent more than thirty months observing the ever-changing dance of water on the zinc platform outside my window. What began as a simple morning ritual became a profound exploration of water: its movements, its forms, and its subtle dialogue with the world. Through this daily encounter, I discovered the quiet beauty and infinite expression of this vital element.

More details

Photographie de gouttière — literally “gutter photography” — takes its name from my vantage point during the months of confinement in Brussels. From the small zinc ledge outside my apartment window, I observed the dance of water as it moved, gathered, and disappeared — an ever-changing surface of reflections, shapes, and textures.

What began as a fleeting curiosity became a ritual that lasted more than 30 months. Each morning, before doing anything else, I would climb to the window to see what new story the night’s rain had left behind. Leaning into the open air, I photographed the delicate choreography between water, light, and metal — a quiet dialogue unfolding just beyond the boundary of the everyday.

This work, born from isolation, opened a portal into infinite variation. It revealed water as artist and messenger — shaping ephemeral worlds that existed only for an instant. It was here, on this small strip of zinc, that my deeper journey with water began.

A matcha latte later

Three days before leaving the apartment, morning light revealed a gift. I stepped out briefly, returning around 11 a.m. to find the sun had melted the ice—but something extraordinary remained. The air bubbles held their vertical alignment, as if suspended in time, ignoring the liquid around them. I ran a toothpick through the lines and confirmed what my eyes could hardly believe: the bubbles preserved the spatial structure they had in the ice, a delicate memory of a frozen moment now floating in water.
